Cecilia Hernández García raises her ten chickens in a pen on a hill where a few dirt-floor houses lean toward the small town of San Miguel del Valle, in Oaxaca, Mexico.
I met Cecilia when I was teaching English and administering interest-free loans for Fundación En Vía, an organization that gives interest-free loans and educational resources to female entrepreneurs in the Tlacolula Valley of Oaxaca, Mexico.
I hope that, when we see Cecilia here, we see her strength and her sense of pride; she is someone with a palpable sense of dignity. Yet she is also kind and deeply compassionate. Her work with her chickens helps support her small family and feed her community -- and it is not easy work, either. She also grows food in a small garden, and when I left her to walk down the hill, she offered me fruit for my walk home.
