Prahlad takes a moment to rub Gajraj on their morning walk. They live together at Wildlife SOS's Elephant Conservation and Care Center (ECCC) in Mathura India, where they both are getting the chance to heal after working lives they'd rather forget.
Gajraj (the male elephant) spent 51 years in chains as a temple elephant. At ECCC he is getting medical attention everyday alongside the focused attention of his keeper, Prahlad. Prahlad came to ECCC after a full career working with elephants in the circus where he says "To teach them we used something sharp" and "we beat them." He says he likes it better here where all they have to do is "care for the elephants."
